They stay in the workspace and in every other view. An id this workspace does not know comes back in unknown. A filter view refuses, because its filter decides who is in it. Use when: Someone no longer belongs in a list that somebody keeps by hand. Do not use for: Marking someone not a lead everywhere (use update_person instead) or deleting the whole view (use delete_view instead).
